Randomvandalism
Welcome to my website Graffitti in Edinburgh. I set up this website after I had amassed a huge collection of graffitti. I am fascinated by the artwork in Graffitti, not that all is Art, some of the graffitti in this site is just downright vandalism.
My daughter has given me the title of GRAFFITTIOLOGIST, I was baffled at first until she explained, (Bless her she's only 12), she said an archaologist finds, records and stores information on a find, only a GRAFFITTIOLOGIST does the same thing but with graffitti. She had a point, so that's my new title GRAFFITTIOLOGIST.
I live in Edinburgh and have always been fascinated by Vandalism/Graffitti, Tagging, especially Gang Tagging. I don't condone vandalism/Graffitti, but there's a lot of talented people out there who are expressing themselves creatively.
I don't have any purpose or reason for this site but it has grown to a size I can barely manage. I have taken all the photographs in this site, edited them individualy and uploaded myself.
I have been taken by surprise at the ratings. Last month, July 2011, I received 77,000 hits, this amazed me as I hadn't done anything to the site for a while. At one point RandomVandalism was reaching well over 100,000 hits every month and peaked to 250,000 hits, but that was hard work to acheive those hits. It's inspired me enough to get the backdated graffiti pieces up. Ask anyone, working on hundreds of photographs, it can be tedious.
I'm always fascinated at the Countries that view RandomVandalism. So far this Month, UK, United States, Brazil, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Portugal, Algeria, Latvia, Spain and France have had a look, and it's only the 6th August.
I feel the need to explain myself a little now. After three years of RandomVandalism, I have met many different walks of life, chatted to quite a few Graffiti Taggers/Artists, climbed into buildings I really shouldn't have been in, squeezed through railings with my handbag and left myself a little vulnerable, especially a female on there own. One of my best walks was when I went under the railway bridge at Meadowbank, I started chatting to a group of teenagers, they were asking why I was there taking pics on my own, and I explained what I was doing. I sat with them and chatted for ages, them swigging vodka and blethering away, it was both interesting and eye-opening, they were such a nice group of kids. I have wandered around places that have been eerie and very uninviting, the worst being Shrubhill Bus Station, it didn't feel like I was there on my own. I went into the OE Mansion on Leith Walk, now that's a building you don't really want to go in yourself. I went in with someone, just in case.
My way of thinking is......'If they can get in to Spraypaint/Tag, then so can I to get the pic', nieve or brave, I'm not sure myself.
I have had Emails from Lecturers at University's asking for help and many from Students who are at Colleges and Uni doing essays or thesis on Graffiti. I met a Student From Edinburgh University who wanted to chat about OE, he was doing his thesis on GPRS tracking system thingy and was covering the area that OE were in. I told him there's no way he could condense it to any area in particular because they are everywhere. Some tags you can pinpoint but not OE, was gonna be a difficult thesis. I have been asked to help a guy who was doing a Masters, "What, I only collect Graffiti". That's what I thought, but I've gained so much knowledge over the last 3 years. I have received Emails asking If I can do someone's wall, No, but I know a guy who can ;-) Many Graffiti Artists have Emailed for one reason or another so I can try and arrange............ To be continued.
I will update this site on a daily basis, adding new material as I find it.
